Venus & Mars

This is Venus & Mars by Sandro Botticelli. It was painted in 1483. The story behind this piece is that Venus, the goddess of love, and Mars, the god of war were lovers. Supposedly, Cupid was the product of this affair.

  1. The horizontal composition of this piece is striking. Mars' casual pose makes me uncomfortable, as if I have walked into such a private moment - one where he felt comfortable enough to fall asleep.

  2. In this painting Mars is a sleeping and unarmed, while Venus is awake and alert. The meaning of the picture is that love conquers wars, or love conquers all.

  3. this painting is very interesting to me because Mars is sleeping through everything that is going on. One of the children is attempting to blow a conch shell in his ear which looks like it did nothing at all. what i also find interesting about this is that he is resting on top of one of the children. in the distance of the background i see the sea which Venus came from so the place they are at is signifigant to them and its not just some place they picked.

  4. I really like the colors. They fit the mood of the painting, like a leisurely afternoon. The artist did a good job in the contrast of the different textures.
